Skyrock image analysis: Color as a main signifier of national/cultural belonging

In June the Digital Methods Initiative was invited to attend a workshop devoted to numerical methods in research on migration in Paris, organized by The ICT-Migration program, in collaboration with the University of California (Santa Cruz). Together with Matthieu Renault and other colleagues we did a small project on image representation used on one of France’s largest blogging and social networking site Skyrock1.

On the Evolution of Methods: Banditry and the Volatility of Methods

I was honored to be invited by The Berkman Center for Internet & Society and the University of St. Gallen to participate in the expert-workshop “Research Methods in the Digitally Networked Information Age” in Brunnen, Switzerland from 10 to 12 May 2010.

On Tuesday Christian Sandvig and I moderated the “Evolution of Methods” panel in which we addressed two topics: 1. banditry (Sandvig) and 2. the volatility of methods (Helmond).

DMI Wiki Analytics Workshop report

CPoV Wikipedia Conference

In anticipation of the Wikipedia CPoV Amsterdam conference, in particular the Wiki Analytics session on Saturday March 27, the Digital Methods Initiative (DMI) organized a workshop for Wikipedia researchers in town to present and discuss methods, tools and data among fellow Wikipedia researchers. What types of research can we do with Wikipedia with which tools and methods? Is there a need for a “comprehensive” list of tools that may be used for Wikipedia research besides the META page on Wikipedia and the tools on the toolserver?
